GeForce GT 315 vs GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 625 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a speed of 790 MHz on this model. It features 48 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 900 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1026 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 192 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 315 52 Watts
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
Difference: 64 Watts (123%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 550 Ti will be 290% quicker than the GeForce GT 315 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 73216 (290%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti is much (approximately 188%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18800 (188%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti will be a lot (about 332%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 315, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16600 (332%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
