Compare any two graphics cards:
GeForce GTX 580 3GB vs Radeon HD 5970
IntroThe GeForce GTX 580 3GB features core clock speeds of 772 MHz on the GPU, and 1002 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 512 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5970, which features clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1600 SPUs as well as 160 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical BenchmarksPower Consumption (Max TDP)
Memory BandwidthThe Radeon HD 5970 should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 580 3GB overall. (explain)
Texel RateThe Radeon HD 5970 should be much (more or less 370%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 580 3GB. (explain)
Pixel RateThe Radeon HD 5970 will be much (approximately 150%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce GTX 580 3GB, and also able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)
Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit. One or more cards in this comparison are multi-core. This means that their bandwidth, texel and pixel rates are theoretically doubled - this does not mean the card will actually perform twice as fast, but only that it should in theory be able to. Actual game benchmarks will give a more accurate idea of what it's capable of. Price Comparison

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions. Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second. Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.

7 Responses to “GeForce GTX 580 3GB vs Radeon HD 5970”so HD 5970 2GB IS THE BEST GRAPHICS CARD IN THE WORLD what about ATI RADEON 5970 4GB
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :0
it should be 50 percent better.......ambelivible
These are theoretical numbers. The 3gb 580 would perform much closer to that of the 5970 than this.
i dont believe this
yes i would like to see the 5970 4gb on this website, also the upcoming classified 580 3gb.
Bunch of morons!!! Yeah theoretical and actual makes a huge diff!!! Dumb@sses!!
Hate to disappoint all the nVidia fanboys, but the GTX580 Classified, FTW or whatever else nVidia is trying to release these days will still get spanked by the ATI 5970. Better take a closer look at those specs of the 5970...here's a refresher 1600 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 ROPs GTX580 doesn't even come close so $499.99 and still getting spanked by the ATI 5970 and I have two of these puppies in crossfireX want to see those real world benchmarks against your Tri-SLI GTX580's?
