GeForce GTX 470 vs GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 470 has a core clock speed of 607 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 837 MHz. It also features a 320-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 448 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 40 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 560 Ti, which features GPU core speed of 822 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1002 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 Stream Processors, 64 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 3466 points
GeForce GTX 470 2937 points
Difference: 529 (18%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 170 Watts
GeForce GTX 470 215 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (26%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 470 should be 4% quicker than the GeForce GTX 560 Ti overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 470 133920 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 128256 MB/sec
Difference: 5664 (4%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti should be quite a bit (approximately 55%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 470. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 52608 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 470 33992 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18616 (55%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti should be just a bit (approximately 8%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 470, and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 26304 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 470 24280 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2024 (8%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.

The 560 Ti is clearly better in this comparison, but personally I'd go for a HD 6870, just because Radeons are better overall. 🙂
