GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB vs GeForce GTX 460 SE

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB features a GPU core speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 Stream Processors, 48 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 460 SE, which has a core clock speed of 650 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 850 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 288 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 90 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 SE 150 Watts
Difference: 60 Watts (67%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 460 SE should be 89% faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 SE 108800 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (89%)

Texel Rate

Both cards have exactly the same texel rate, so theoretically they should be equally good at at anisotropic filtering. (explain)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 460 SE is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 SE 20800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10400 (100%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
