Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 460 SE 150 Watts
GeForce GTX 285 1GB 204 Watts
Difference: 54 Watts (36%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 285 1GB should be 46% quicker than the GeForce GTX 460 SE overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 285 1GB 158976 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 460 SE 108800 MB/sec
Difference: 50176 (46%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 285 1GB will be much (about 66%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 460 SE. (explain)

GeForce GTX 285 1GB 51840 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 SE 31200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 20640 (66%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 SE is just a bit (about 0%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 285 1GB, and also capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 SE 20800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 285 1GB 20736 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 64 (0%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
