GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon HD 3650

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 features a clock speed of 783 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 902 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 3650, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 725 MHz. The GDDR4 RAM runs at a speed of 800 MHz on this particular model. It features 120(24x5) SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Difference: 28 Watts (36%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTS 450 should theoretically perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 3650 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3650 25600 MB/sec
Difference: 32128 (126%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 is much (approximately 332%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 3650. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 5800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19256 (332%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 2900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9628 (332%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
