GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon HD 5450

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 features core speeds of 783 MHz on the GPU, and 902 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5450, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 650 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a speed of 800 MHz on this particular model. It features 80(16x5) SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 5450 19 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Difference: 87 Watts (458%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTS 450 should theoretically be much superior to the Radeon HD 5450 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 44928 (351%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 should be a lot (more or less 382%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19856 (382%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 is much (about 382%) more effective at AA than the Radeon HD 5450, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9928 (382%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
