GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB vs GeForce GT 450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB comes with clock speeds of 513 MHz on the GPU, and 792 MHz on the 640 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 96 SPUs as well as 48 TAUs and 20 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GT 450 (OEM), which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 790 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 144 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 24 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 106 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 143 Watts
Difference: 37 Watts (35%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) should theoretically be a lot better than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 96000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 32640 (52%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB will be much (about 30%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5664 (30%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) is superior to the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8700 (85%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
