GeForce GT 440 1.5GB vs Radeon HD 6770

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 1.5GB comes with a GPU core speed of 594 MHz, and the 1536 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 144 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6770, which comes with a core clock frequency of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1050 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 800 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 6770 67200 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 is quite a bit (about 153%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 36000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 21744 (153%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 will be just a bit (approximately 1%) better at AA than the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 14400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 144 (1%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
