GeForce GT 430 1GB vs Radeon HD 5570

Intro

The GeForce GT 430 1GB has a clock speed of 700 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 96 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5570, which has a GPU core clock speed of 650 MHz, and 512 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 900 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5570 43 Watts
GeForce GT 430 1GB 60 Watts
Difference: 17 Watts (40%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform exactly the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5570 will be a little bit (more or less 16%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GT 430 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 430 1GB 11200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1800 (16%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5570 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 430 1GB 2800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (86%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
