GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 vs GeForce GT 340 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 comes with core clock speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 1012 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 48 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GT 340 1GB, which has core clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 96 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 58 Watts
GeForce GT 340 1GB 69 Watts
Difference: 11 Watts (19%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GT 340 1GB, in theory, should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 54400 MB/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 32384 MB/sec
Difference: 22016 (68%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 340 1GB should be a lot (more or less 76%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7600 (76%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 is a bit (about 14%) better at AA than the GeForce GT 340 1GB, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 5000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 600 (14%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
