Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 6970 should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 176000 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 137600 (358%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6970 will be much (approximately 220%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 84480 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 58080 (220%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6970 is much (approximately 327%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 28160 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21560 (327%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
