GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon HD 6750

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 features a core clock frequency of 625 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 790 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 48 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6750, which has GPU core speed of 725 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 720 Stream Processors, 36 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 315 52 Watts
Radeon HD 6750 86 Watts
Difference: 34 Watts (65%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 6750 should be a lot faster than the GeForce GT 315 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 38720 (153%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 should be much (more or less 161%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 26100 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16100 (161%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6750 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 11600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6600 (132%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
