Radeon HD 5550 vs Radeon HD 6750

Intro

The Radeon HD 5550 has a GPU core speed of 550 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR2 RAM runs at 400 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 320(64x5) SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6750, which has clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 720 SPUs along with 36 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6750 should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 5550 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5550 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 should be a lot (more or less 197%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5550. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 26100 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5550 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17300 (197%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6750 is superior to the Radeon HD 5550, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5550 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7200 (164%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
