Radeon RX 7900 XT vs Radeon RX Vega 64

Intro

The Radeon RX 7900 XT features clock speeds of 1500 MHz on the GPU, and 2500 MHz on the 20480 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 5376 SPUs along with 336 Texture Address Units and 192 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX Vega 64, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1247 MHz, and 8192 MB of HBM2 RAM set to run at 1890 MHz through a 2048-bit bus. It also features 4096 Stream Processors, 256 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon RX Vega 64 295 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (2%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 7900 XT should in theory be much better than the Radeon RX Vega 64 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Radeon RX Vega 64 495411 MB/sec
Difference: 323789 (65%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT should be quite a bit (about 58%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX Vega 64. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX Vega 64 319232 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 184768 (58%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT is quite a bit (approximately 261%) more effective at AA than the Radeon RX Vega 64, and also capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX Vega 64 79808 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 208192 (261%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
