GeForce GTX 1070 Ti vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti comes with core speeds of 1607 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2432 SPUs as well as 152 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which makes use of a 5 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1500 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM is set to run at a speed of 2500 MHz on this particular card. It features 5376 SPUs along with 336 TAUs and 192 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 180 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 120 Watts (67%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 7900 XT will be 213% quicker than the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 262144 MB/sec
Difference: 557056 (213%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT will be quite a bit (approximately 106%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 244264 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 259736 (106%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XT is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 102848 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 185152 (180%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
