Radeon RX 6650 XT vs Radeon Vega Frontier Edition

Intro

The Radeon RX 6650 XT comes with a GPU core speed of 2055 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory is set to run at 2190 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, which comes with a clock speed of 1382 MHz and a HBM2 memory speed of 1890 MHz. It also features a 2048-bit memory bus, and uses a 14 nm design. It is made up of 4096 SPUs, 256 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6650 XT 176 Watts
Radeon Vega Frontier Edition 300 Watts
Difference: 124 Watts (70%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition will be 73% faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT in general, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon Vega Frontier Edition 495452 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6650 XT 287072 MB/sec
Difference: 208380 (73%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is a lot (approximately 35%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 6650 XT. (explain)

Radeon Vega Frontier Edition 353792 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6650 XT 263040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 90752 (35%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6650 XT should be much (more or less 49%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, and able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 6650 XT 131520 Mpixels/sec
Radeon Vega Frontier Edition 88448 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 43072 (49%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
