GeForce GTX 580 3GB vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 3GB has a GPU clock speed of 772 MHz, and the 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1002 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 512 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 48 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which features a core clock speed of 2200 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2250 MHz. It also features a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 6 nm design. It features 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
GeForce GTX 580 3GB 244 Watts
Difference: 137 Watts (128%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 580 3GB should in theory perform a lot faster than the Radeon RX 6500 XT in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 3GB 192384 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Difference: 44928 (30%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT is much (about 185%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 580 3GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 580 3GB 49408 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 91392 (185%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 580 3GB 37056 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 33344 (90%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
