Radeon HD 7790 vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 7790 makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1000 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this card. It features 896 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which has GPU clock speed of 1968 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2048 Stream Processors, 128 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7790 85 Watts
Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 75 Watts (88%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6600 XT should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 7790 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 262144 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7790 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 166144 (173%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT is a lot (more or less 350%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7790. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 56000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 195904 (350%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 109952 (687%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
