GeForce RTX 2080 Ti vs GeForce RTX 3080 Ti

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti features a core clock frequency of 1350 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also makes use of a 352-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 12 nm design. It is comprised of 4352 SPUs, 272 Texture Address Units, and 88 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, which features core clock speeds of 1365 MHz on the GPU, and 1188 MHz on the 12288 MB of GDDR6X RAM. It features 10240 SPUs along with 320 TAUs and 112 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 250 Watts
GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 350 Watts
Difference: 100 Watts (40%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 934297 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 630784 MB/sec
Difference: 303513 (48%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti should be a little bit (about 19%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 436800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 367200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 69600 (19%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is superior to the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 152880 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 118800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 34080 (29%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
