GeForce GTX 860M vs GeForce RTX 3060

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M features a GPU clock speed of 797 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 1152 Stream Processors, 96 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 3060, which features a core clock frequency of 1320 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 1875 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 8 nm design. It features 3584 SPUs, 112 TAUs, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 860M 45 Watts
GeForce RTX 3060 170 Watts
Difference: 125 Watts (278%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 3060 should be 476% quicker than the GeForce GTX 860M in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 368640 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 304640 (476%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3060 should be much (more or less 93%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 860M. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 147840 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 71328 (93%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3060 will be a lot (approximately 397%) better at FSAA than the GeForce GTX 860M, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 63360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 50608 (397%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
