Radeon R9 M270X vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 M270X has a GPU core clock speed of 725 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1825 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 5120 Stream Processors, 320 TAUs, and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should theoretically be much faster than the Radeon R9 M270X in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 452288 (628%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should be much (approximately 1914%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 555000 (1914%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT is a lot (approximately 1914%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M270X, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 222000 (1914%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
