Radeon R9 M280X vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 M280X has core speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1375 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 896 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 memory works at a speed of 2000 MHz on this specific model. It features 5120 SPUs as well as 320 TAUs and 128 ROPs.

Radeon RX 6900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 225 Watts (300%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should theoretically perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M280X in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 88000 MB/sec
Difference: 436288 (496%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT will be quite a bit (approximately 1059%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M280X. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 50400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 533600 (1059%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6900 XT is superior to the Radeon R9 M280X, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 219200 (1522%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
