GeForce 840M vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The GeForce 840M comes with core clock speeds of 1029 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1825 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 5120 SPUs, 320 Texture Address Units, and 128 ROPs.

Radeon RX 6900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 270 Watts (900%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 6900 XT should be a lot faster than the GeForce 840M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
GeForce 840M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 508288 (3177%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should be a lot (about 2265%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 840M. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 840M 24696 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 559304 (2265%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT will be quite a bit (approximately 2738%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 840M, and also able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 840M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 225368 (2738%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
