GeForce GTX 980 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 980 features a clock frequency of 1126 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which has core speeds of 1825 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 4608 SPUs as well as 288 TAUs and 128 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 6800 XT should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce GTX 980 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 524288 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 980 224000 MB/sec
Difference: 300288 (134%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT is much (more or less 265%) better at AF than the GeForce GTX 980. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 980 144128 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 381472 (265%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT will be a lot (about 224%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 980, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 980 72064 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 161536 (224%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
