GeForce GTX 960 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 960 comes with core speeds of 1127 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which comes with a core clock frequency of 1825 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2000 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It features 4608 SPUs, 288 Texture Address Units, and 128 ROPs.

Radeon RX 6800 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 180 Watts (150%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 6800 XT should in theory be quite a bit better than the GeForce GTX 960 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 524288 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 960 112000 MB/sec
Difference: 412288 (368%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT will be quite a bit (approximately 629%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 960. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 960 72128 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 453472 (629%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT should be quite a bit (about 548%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce GTX 960, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 960 36064 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 197536 (548%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
