GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB vs GeForce 8800 GTX

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB comes with clock speeds of 513 MHz on the GPU, and 792 MHz on the 640 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 20 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce 8800 GTX, which features GPU clock speed of 575 MHz, and 768 MB of GDDR3 RAM set to run at 900 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also features 128 Stream Processors, 64 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

GeForce 8800 GTX 86400 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 23040 (36%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTX will be much (more or less 49%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 36800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 12176 (49%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTX will be much (approximately 35%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 13800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3540 (35%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
