Radeon R7 370 4G vs Radeon RX 590

Intro

The Radeon R7 370 4G comes with a GPU core clock speed of 975 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1400 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 1024 Stream Processors, 64 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 590, which makes use of a 12 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1469 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 2000 MHz on this particular card. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 590 should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R7 370 4G overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 262144 MB/sec
Radeon R7 370 4G 179200 MB/sec
Difference: 82944 (46%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 590 will be quite a bit (more or less 239%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 370 4G. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 211536 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 370 4G 62400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 149136 (239%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 590 should be quite a bit (approximately 51%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R7 370 4G, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 47008 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 370 4G 31200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15808 (51%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
