GeForce GT 1030 vs Radeon HD 4890 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 1030 features a GPU clock speed of 1265 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1502 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 4890 1GB, which has a clock frequency of 1000 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 975 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 1030 30 Watts
Radeon HD 4890 1GB 190 Watts
Difference: 160 Watts (533%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 4890 1GB should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GT 1030 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 1GB 124800 MB/sec
GeForce GT 1030 49152 MB/sec
Difference: 75648 (154%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 1030 should be just a bit (more or less 1%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 4890 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GT 1030 40480 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4890 1GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 480 (1%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 1030 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GT 1030 20240 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4890 1GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4240 (27%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
