GeForce 8600 GTS vs Nvidia Titan Xp

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GTS has a clock speed of 675 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 80 nm design. It features 32 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Nvidia Titan Xp, which has core speeds of 1582 MHz on the GPU, and 1426 MHz on the 12288 MB of GDDR5X memory. It features 3840 SPUs along with 240 Texture Address Units and 96 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GTS 75 Watts
Nvidia Titan Xp 250 Watts
Difference: 175 Watts (233%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Nvidia Titan Xp should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 8600 GTS in general. (explain)

Nvidia Titan Xp 560845 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 528845 (1653%)

Texel Rate

The Nvidia Titan Xp will be quite a bit (more or less 3416%) better at AF than the GeForce 8600 GTS. (explain)

Nvidia Titan Xp 379680 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 10800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 368880 (3416%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Nvidia Titan Xp is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Nvidia Titan Xp 151872 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 5400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 146472 (2712%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
