Radeon HD 6950 2GB vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1250 MHz on this specific card. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 550, which makes use of a 14 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this model. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 150 Watts (300%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6950 2GB should theoretically be much superior to the Radeon RX 550 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Difference: 45312 (40%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB will be quite a bit (about 100%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 35200 (100%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is superior to the Radeon RX 550, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8000 (45%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
