GeForce GTX 1070 vs Nvidia Titan X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1070 has core clock speeds of 1506 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1920 SPUs along with 120 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Nvidia Titan X, which has GPU core speed of 1417 MHz, and 12288 MB of GDDR5X memory running at 1251 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 3584 Stream Processors, 224 Texture Address Units, and 96 Raster Operation Units.

Memory Bandwidth

The Nvidia Titan X should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 overall. (explain)

Nvidia Titan X 491520 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 262144 MB/sec
Difference: 229376 (88%)

Texel Rate

The Nvidia Titan X should be a lot (approximately 76%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 1070. (explain)

Nvidia Titan X 317408 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 180720 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 136688 (76%)

Pixel Rate

The Nvidia Titan X is quite a bit (approximately 41%) better at FSAA than the GeForce GTX 1070, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Nvidia Titan X 136032 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 96384 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 39648 (41%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
