GeForce GT 320 vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The GeForce GT 320 features a GPU clock speed of 540 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 790 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 72 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M370X, which features a core clock speed of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M370X should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce GT 320 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 320 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 46720 (185%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X should be quite a bit (about 147%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GT 320. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 320 12960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19040 (147%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M370X is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 320 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8480 (196%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
