Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 features a GPU core clock speed of 668 MHz, and the 256 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 828 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320(64x5) Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M360, which has core clock speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 3690/3830 will be 66% quicker than the Radeon R7 M360 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 10496 (66%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 is a lot (approximately 153%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16312 (153%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 3690/3830 is superior to the Radeon R7 M360, not by a very large margin though. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1688 (19%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
