GeForce GTX 650 Ti vs Radeon R9 M280X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 650 Ti features clock speeds of 928 MHz on the GPU, and 1350 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 768 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M280X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1375 MHz on this card. It features 896 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 M280X 75 Watts
GeForce GTX 650 Ti 110 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (47%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M280X should perform just a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 650 Ti overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M280X 88000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 650 Ti 86400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (2%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 Ti will be a little bit (approximately 18%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R9 M280X. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 Ti 59392 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 50400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8992 (18%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 Ti should be just a bit (more or less 3%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon R9 M280X, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 Ti 14848 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 448 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
