Geforce GTX 770 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Geforce GTX 770 makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 1046 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1753 MHz on this model. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M255, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 940 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Geforce GTX 770 should be 1302% faster than the Radeon R5 M255 in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 208384 (1302%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 should be much (more or less 612%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 115088 (612%)

Pixel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 is quite a bit (about 345%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and also capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25952 (345%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
