GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB features core clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M265X, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 575 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 M265X should theoretically be a lot superior to the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 17600 (32%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X will be a lot (approximately 31%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5400 (31%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X should be quite a bit (approximately 109%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4800 (109%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
