Radeon HD 3850 1GB vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The Radeon HD 3850 1GB makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 828 MHz on this specific card. It features 320(64x5) SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M265, which comes with GPU clock speed of 725 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 Stream Processors, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 3850 1GB should perform much faster than the Radeon R7 M265 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 52992 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 20992 (66%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 should be quite a bit (approximately 63%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3850 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6712 (63%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 3850 1GB will be a lot (more or less 84%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon R7 M265, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4888 (84%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
