GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti features a clock speed of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1026 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 24 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M260X, which features core clock speeds of 825 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 550 Ti should be 54% faster than the Radeon R7 M260X in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 34496 (54%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti will be much (about 45%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R7 M260X. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9000 (45%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is superior to the Radeon R7 M260X, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15000 (227%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
