GeForce 8800 GT 512MB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB features a GPU clock speed of 600 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 112 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 940 MHz. The DDR3 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB should in theory be much better than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB will be quite a bit (about 79%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14800 (79%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2080 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
