Radeon HD 4830 1GB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 4830 1GB features a GPU core speed of 575 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR4 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 640(128x5) Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R5 M255, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 940 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 4830 1GB should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4830 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 is a little bit (more or less 2%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4830 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 18400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 400 (2%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4830 1GB is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 4830 1GB 9200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1680 (22%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
