GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti has a core clock frequency of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1026 MHz. It also makes use of a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with GPU core speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 Stream Processors, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 82496 (516%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti is much (about 53%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10000 (53%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti should be a lot (more or less 187%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon R5 M255, and also able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14080 (187%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
