Geforce GTX 770 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Geforce GTX 770 has a core clock speed of 1046 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1753 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 1536 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which has a core clock frequency of 940 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 770, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 208384 (1302%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 is quite a bit (approximately 612%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 115088 (612%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 770 is superior to the Radeon R5 M255, and very much so. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25952 (345%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
