Geforce GTX 770 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Geforce GTX 770 comes with a GPU clock speed of 1046 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1753 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 1536 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R5 M255, which features a clock speed of 940 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 770 should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 208384 (1302%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 is quite a bit (approximately 612%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 115088 (612%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 770 is superior to the Radeon R5 M255, by far. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25952 (345%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
