GeForce GTX 980M vs Radeon R7 250X 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 980M has a GPU core speed of 1038 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1536 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 250X 2GB, which comes with GPU core speed of 1000 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 95 Watts
GeForce GTX 980M 100 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (5%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 980M should in theory be much better than the Radeon R7 250X 2GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 128000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 250X 2GB 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (78%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980M should be quite a bit (approximately 149%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R7 250X 2GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 99648 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 250X 2GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 59648 (149%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 980M is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 66432 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 250X 2GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 50432 (315%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
