GeForce 940M vs Radeon HD 5750 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 940M has core clock speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 5750 1GB, which features a core clock speed of 700 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1150 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 720(144x5) SPUs, 36 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 5750 1GB should theoretically be a lot superior to the GeForce 940M in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5750 1GB 73600 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (360%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M should be a little bit (more or less 2%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5750 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5750 1GB 25200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 528 (2%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5750 1GB is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 5750 1GB 11200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2624 (31%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
