GeForce GTS 150 vs GeForce GTX 950

Intro

The GeForce GTS 150 comes with core speeds of 740 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 128 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 950, which has core speeds of 1024 MHz on the GPU, and 1652 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 768 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 950 90 Watts
GeForce GTS 150 141 Watts
Difference: 51 Watts (57%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 950 is 230% faster than the GeForce GTS 150 overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 105728 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 150 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 73728 (230%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950 is just a bit (about 4%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTS 150. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 49152 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 150 47360 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1792 (4%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950 will be a lot (more or less 177%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTS 150, and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 32768 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 150 11840 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20928 (177%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
