GeForce GT 230 vs GeForce GTX 950

Intro

The GeForce GT 230 has a clock speed of 550 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 800 MHz. It also features a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 950, which uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 1024 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1652 MHz on this specific card. It features 768 SPUs as well as 48 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 230 65 Watts
GeForce GTX 950 90 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (38%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 950 should be much faster than the GeForce GT 230 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 105728 MB/sec
GeForce GT 230 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 67328 (175%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950 should be a lot (about 459%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 230. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 49152 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 230 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 40352 (459%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 950 is superior to the GeForce GT 230, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 32768 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 230 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 28368 (645%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
