GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon R7 370 2G

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB features clock speeds of 783 MHz on the GPU, and 902 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 370 2G, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 975 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1400 MHz on this particular card. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Radeon R7 370 2G 110 Watts
Difference: 4 Watts (4%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R7 370 2G should be a lot faster than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 179200 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 121472 (210%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 370 2G is much (about 149%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 62400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 37344 (149%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R7 370 2G is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 31200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 18672 (149%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
