GeForce GT 130 vs GeForce GTX 970

Intro

The GeForce GT 130 features clock speeds of 500 MHz on the GPU, and 250 MHz on the 768 MB of DDR2 memory. It features 48 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 970, which comes with a core clock speed of 1050 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 1664 SPUs, 104 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 130 75 Watts
GeForce GTX 970 145 Watts
Difference: 70 Watts (93%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 970 should theoretically be a lot better than the GeForce GT 130 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970 224000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 130 12000 MB/sec
Difference: 212000 (1767%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 970 will be a lot (more or less 810%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 130. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970 109200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 130 12000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 97200 (810%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 970 should be quite a bit (more or less 740%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GT 130, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970 67200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 130 8000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 59200 (740%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
