GeForce GTX 970 vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The GeForce GTX 970 comes with a core clock speed of 1050 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1664 SPUs, 104 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5670, which comes with a clock frequency of 775 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
GeForce GTX 970 145 Watts
Difference: 84 Watts (138%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 970 should in theory be much superior to the Radeon HD 5670 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970 224000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 160000 (250%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 970 will be quite a bit (approximately 605%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970 109200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 93700 (605%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 970 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970 67200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 61000 (984%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
